Your Smallest Measurable Step Forward

Sunday night. The calendar app is open on your laptop. Anxiety tying your stomach in knots.

Three sessions on Tuesday. Two on Thursday. A cancellation on Friday you haven’t filled.

Many of you have sat in this exact moment. Doing the work. Up late writing website copy or marketing material. And still the schedule has white space in it that should not be there. The white space is starting to feel like a verdict.

If you’re anything like me, your first impulse is a “big push.” The weekend marathon of website edits. The networking event you drive 45 minutes to and leave with three business cards and a headache. Grand gestures are grand. There’s a time for the all-nighter.

But the calendar does not fill from fits and starts. It fills from one small, clear action, five days a week, for ninety days. And you have to maintain that consistency in the face of empty slots for a little while. That is the whole thing. It’s so simple, it’s almost invisible.

WHY THE SMALL THING BEATS THE BIG THING

Relationships move at human speed. The colleague you emailed in February doesn’t reply until April, on a Tuesday, from her phone, because something reminded her of you. That’s the pace. One person remembers you reached out. Another reads your comment on a forum. A peer answers your email two weeks later. The relationship builds drip by drip.

Sixty drips over ninety days is sixty conversations that did not exist before you started. A handful of those become real, sustainable referral relationships.

THE MECHANICS

Every Sunday or Monday, sit down for 15 minutes and pick five names and five actions.

  • A peer from a training you never followed up with
  • A physician who sent you a client last spring
  • An old colleague you’ve meant to email
  • A primary care office you walk past every day

Assign one to each weekday. Monday, the email. Tuesday, the phone call. Wednesday, a forum comment. Thursday, coffee. Friday, the thank-you note.

The smallness is the point. Smallness survives a hard clinical week, a sick kid, or a Wednesday when everything runs over.

You need a habit that holds up when you don’t feel like a marketer, which is most days, because you’re not a marketer. You’re a therapist.

One small, meaningful action a day is what holds up the referral system we teach inside TPA. The deeper work is about who those five people are and how to think about the relationships behind them. For now, you do not need the deeper work. You need to do the daily action.

TRY THIS FOR ONE WEEK

Pick five names tonight. Do one a day. Then come back next Friday and tell us what happened.
